Who We Are

Our “roots” as Gate City Vineyard are that of a seeking generation being met by a sovereign movement of God. The 1970’s ushered in a generation with an anti-establishment “countercultural” perspective through which many saw the radical and revolutionary nature of Jesus afresh… capturing what more conventional religious perspectives had often lost. They sought expressions of this shared “living relationship” with the revolutionary Christ marked by desire for a personal experience of God’s love and presence, vitality of contemporary music, simplicity of structure, and an invitation to make a real difference in a lost world.

In the early 1980’s John Wimber became the spiritual father of this emerging movement of associated churches, and God imparted to John a vision for thousands of new churches as well as serving the renewal of the larger church across various traditions.

As the movement continues to emerge, the conviction remains that God’s desire is not primarily for us to build the Vineyard but to seek His Kingdom (His reign), to love the whole church, and to bless what He’s blessing. In 1996, New Beginnings Evangelical Presbyterian Church affiliated with the Vineyard Movement. A few years later the church changed its name to Gate City Vineyard Church. After 20 plus years of ministry, Gate City continues to seek the calling to make Him known by revealing His Kingdom in our time and place. As God’s “Vineyard,” we celebrate His ongoing faithfulness and fruitfulness in our midst.

Creative Ways to Give…

Practice Priority Budgeting—Many families will choose to rearrange their priorities and give up something in their current budget in order to give more to such an initiative. Priority budgeting may mean postponing a planned expenditure such as a new car, vacation, home remodel or other major purchase. Many Christians giving to generosity initiatives find a way to give through sacrificial commitments made in faith and coupled with priority budgeting.

Increased Giving with Increased Income—Some people receive periodic increases in salary or bonuses from their employers. The temptation for many of us is to increase our lifestyle to fit the higher income. In many instances, families have decided that they will commit the full amount of salary increases to generosity initiatives.
